More than 60 miles of backpacking trails are available throughout Shawnee State Forest near Portsmouth. Also known as the "Little Smokies" of Ohio, the Shawnee State Forest covers more than 60,000 acres including 8,000 acres of designated wilderness (9.8-mile side trail available). The Shawnee Backpack Trail is divided into two sections, a 23-mile north loop and a 28-mile south loop. Both trails wind through scenic forested areas, featuring waterfalls, lakes and an abundance of wildlife. Eight walk-in camp areas with fire rings and pit latrines are free to the overnight user. A self-registration permit is required. Day hikes are blazed in blue. Drinking water is available on trail.
Directions: From Portsmouth, OH, Travel six miles west on State Route 52 to reach the forest office. Kiosk provides maps. Trailhead parking for the Backpack Trail is located north of Turkey Creek Lake off Forest Road 16.
