This 4.5 mile trip leads the hiker or rider through the steep forested ridges, alpine meadows, and glacial cirques of the Carter Meadows area. Recent construction efforts have greatly improved the possibility or a loop trip including Long Gulch Lake in the adjacent drainage. The trail now continues uninterrupted past the lake's outlet to the ridgetop along an improved grade. The trailhead is located midway in the Carter Meadows.

Directions: From Fort Jones, Follow Highway 3 south for 25 miles to the Callahan-Cecilville Road turnoff (County Rd 1C0293). Continue on this paved, two-lane road for another 11 miles to Hidden Horse Campground which lies on a forest service road just off of County Hwy. 1C02. The trailhead lies just beyond this campground.
