The Dog Canyon National Recreation Trail is only for the serious hiker. Fairly strenuous, it climbs 3,100 feet from behind Oliver Lee Memorial State Park's visitor Center to an elevation of 7,500 feet at Joplin Ridge. Total length is 5.5 miles one-way. Spring and Fall are the recommended seasons for this hike due to the intensity of summer heat.

Directions: From Alamogordo, Oliver Lee State Park is located in the south-central region of the state, near the Sacremento Mts. It lies just south of Alamogorda, NM off of Highway 54.

Distance: 5.5 miles

Difficulty: Strenuous
