From Lancaster near Vermont's state line traveling east to Shelburne along US 2 offers views of the northern most territory of White Mountains National Forest. Mt. Starr King, Mt Waumbek and Pliny Mountain lie along the north side of the highway. To the south lies the majority of the National Forest. Access to trailheads on the Presidentials are marked along US 2. Also, the Androscoggin Ranger District Office rests off US 2 (SR 16) just southeast of Moose Brook State Park.
From the small metropolis of Berlin traveling north to Errol along SR 16, the driver will be paralleling the Androscoggin River passing the Nansen Wayside Park, coming within a mile of the Milan Hill State Park (SR 110B), the Pontook Reservoir, Mollidgewock State Park and the Androscoggin Wayside Park. Just east of Errol is Umbagog Lake Campground and Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge.
State Route 110 travels east / west across the state from Northumberland to Drummer. Several covered bridges, picnic areas and fishing opportunities are along this route that travels the upper tip of White Mountain National Forest.
In the heart of the Great North Woods downhill skiing and wildlife viewing abounds along SR 26 between Colebrook and Errol. Dixville State Park is located about midway offering picnicking, fishing and hiking trails of varying difficulty.
From the Vermont border down of Colebrook traveling north along US 3 to the Canadian border the road parallels the Connecticut River then turns northeast to reach Lake Francis, First Connecticut Lake, Second Connecticut Lake then Third Connecticut Lake which sits on the border of New Hampshire and Canada. Several wildlife management areas along the route offer hunting and fishing opportunities. Deer Mountain Campground is popular with both hunters and anglers.

Directions: From Berlin, NH, The scenic drives in Great North Woods are located north of Berlin along the state routes, with the exception of one that travels from Lancaster near the Vermont state line east to Shelburne on Maine's state line. There are no Interstates in this region and few secondary roads.
