Dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches offer plenty for walkers and hikers to explore; there's also fishing, surfing, and bird-watching. In winter, the headlands offer unobstructed views of migrating gray whales; in spring and summer, wildflowers bring patches of brilliant color to the grassy bluffs. At any time, the trails may be shrouded in mist, but even then—or, perhaps, especially then—the rugged landscape is alluring. The Mendocino Headlands Trail is two to five miles round-trip, depending on where you go.
