Tamarack Trail is an easy 2-mile loop that circles Mauthe Lake. A self-guided trail booklet is available at the beach or entrance station. The nature trail meanders through a portion of the 800-acre Milwaukee River and Swamp State Natural Area. The colorful longear sunfish is listed as a threaten species and is present at the Milwaukee River dam crossing. Birds such as warblers, woodpeckers, and vireos are often seen and heard along this scenic trail. The area is designated as a Wisconsin Wildlife Viewing Area and is included in the national "Watchable Wildlife" program. The trail is in a wildlife refuge area and is closed to hunting year round.
Directions: From Campbellsport, WI, Take Hwy. 67 northeast to County SS. Turn southeast on County SS and proceed to County G. Head south on County G to reach the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area. Trail begins from the rec area.
