Both hikers and mountain bikers enjoy the wildflowers and alpine scenery on this eight-mile round-trip to White Pine Lake, a well-graded climb of 2,300 feet. White Pine Trailhead is 5.3 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon on the right, one mile beyond Tanners Flat Campground. The trail crosses Little Cottonwood Creek, then follows an old mountain road almost all the way to the lake. After one mile, and just before crossing White Pine Fork, turn sharply left (Red Pine Trail continues straight ahead across a bridge) up switchbacks to a meadow and ridge, then drop down to the lake. Red Pine Trail leads to Lower and Upper Red Pine Lakes farther west in the Lone Peak Wilderness. Another path, Maybird Trail, branches west off Red Pine Trail about half way up and climbs to the tiny Maybird Lakes.
