This relatively short circuit hike is packed with scenery along a challenging course. Visible is sculpted rock as a result of the 10,000 year-old glacial melt. Look for the famed rock formations of Elephant's Head, Old Man of the Dalles and the Maltese Cross. This area known as the Dalles, features deep river gorges framed by 80-foot sheer cliffs. Stone and wooden steps ease the difficult climb to the park's highest bluff. From Summit Rock, the trail descends into Echo Canyon that was also carved by glacial movement. Besides hikers, snowshoers use the trail in winter. Modern snowshoe equipment is recommended.
Directions: From St. Croix Falls, WI, At the junction of Hwy. 35 & US 8 travel south on Hwy. 35 for half a mile. Turn right to enter the park. Take the park road 1 mile to parking on left. (Additional parking is farther down the road of the right.)
