To begin the loop hike, walk across the ball field toward the bay. You will see a sign marked "Seahawk Nature Trail." Cross the footbridge and follow the water's edge of Indian River Bay. Continue into a marshland saddled by swamp grasses and tidal bay. From here, you'll see Burton's Island, part of Delaware Seashore State Park. (Trail offered.) Proceed at water's edge observing the osprey nesting platform. Below the platform, do not overlook the lovely meadow laced with wildflowers and the pollen-loving insects they attract. The trail then follows a route in and around meadow, pine forest, freshwater ponds, and poplar woodland. The wildlife changes along with the habitat. You're likely to observe woodpeckers, songbirds, and sunning painted turtles. Once you see the park's fee booth off to the right, you'll be footsteps away from the trailhead.
Directions: From Bethany Beach, DE, Take Route 26 to County Road 346 or 347 north for 2 miles to the park entrance. The trailhead is located adjacent to the park's ball field. Park in the ball field parking lot.
