Looking to see Northern California's towering redwood forests? At Roaring Camp Railroads, two companies offer two different routes through glorious scenery. The Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 75-minute journey via steam train to Bear Mountain and back. Small, powerful locomotives carry passengers over hills and through the redwoods, whistling and chugging along, just as they did more than a century ago. Adult round-trip fares cost $21.50, while children's fares run $15.50; all travelers younger than two ride for free. The other railroad, the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway Company, takes visitors through a virgin redwood forest, down the San Lorenzo River Gorge, over bridges and trestles, through tunnels, and along quiet streets lined with Victorian homes before arriving at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Adult round-trip fares cost $23.50, while children's fares run $18.50; all travelers younger than two ride for free.
