The trail begins from the base of Cannon Mountain Tramway and travels over Cannon Mountain and westbound to the peaks of Mt. Kinsman to eventually terminates at Lost River along SR 112. This entire trek is over 17 miles one-way. A 2-mile section of the trail affords views of the tramway and the slopes leading down to Echo Lake. You'll also get a glimpse of the eastern shoulder of Cannon Mountain and an old ski slope. Shortly, you'll be ascending this very steep gravel strewn area. Windswept evergreens characterize the upper regions of the trail. Once you achieve the higher ground, you'll see a spur trail which leads out to a cliff which is near the top of the Old Man's head. This outlook offers spectacular views of Franconia Notch with its deep valleys and jagged outcroppings. The main trail continues west to descend to a low ridge and eventually intersects with Hi-Cannon Trail. As difficult as this trail is to ascend, descending can be as much or even more challenging. An alternative route down is via the tram which does charge a nominal fee.
Directions: From Franconia, NH, Travel south on I-93 for several miles to reach Exit 2, Cannon Mountain Tramway. Park in the ski area parking lot. The trail begins in the picnic area which is located on the left side of the lot.
