Up to 25,000 mammals live here, including bull elephants, cheetahs, black rhinos, zebras, and wildebeests. In addition to the fabulous wildlife concentration, the enormous bowl of the extinct crater has steep, 2,000-foot-high walls that hinder migration in and out, resulting in unusual behavioral activity. Hyenas are so abundant that, rather than taking on the traditional role of scavenger, they are confident predators. By contrast, Ngorongoro is the only place in Africa where lions scavenge for food.
