Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon along the East Coast of the United States, at 80 miles long and up to 30 miles wide at some points. Protected from the big Atlantic surf by the Outer Banks' slender barrier islands, conditions are mellow here, ideal for family swimming and kayaking. This is also one of the world's great windsurfing locales, with steady winds, shallow thigh-deep water, and glassy water conditions. Canadian Hole is the pick of the windsurfing areas.

  • Sail a section of the massive Intracoastal Waterway, a commercial and recreational waterway that spans the country's Eastern Seaboard. Large commercial vessels are obstructed by the shallower water of Pamlico Sound, making it a fun place to sail in peace. The small harbor of Washington, on the mainland across from the Outer Banks, is an interesting and accessible spot from which to launch.
