The Green Mountain Trail is a difficult 5 mile trip that does not have trail blazes. It begins just south of the Sunburst Campground and Picnic Area and travels along Fork Ridge and along Green Knob. The elevation begins at 3,200 feet and travels as high as 5,800 feet and ends at 5,400 feet along Art Loeb Trail. The trail stays within the Middle Prong Wilderness area which is wonderful for wildlife viewing.
Directions: From Waynesville, NC, Travel east on US 276 about 7 miles turning right (south) onto SR 215. Travel SR 215 about 8 miles to the recreation area. Trail begins on SR 215 just south of the recreation area on the south side of the road.
Elevation: 5,800 feet
Elevation Gain: 2,600 feet
