This trail is for hikers only, traveling about 3.5 miles offering access to the community of Lost Cove.

Follow Bear Woods Road (Forest Road 5506) for about 1 mile. After .75 mile, the road splits. Bear right to the gated open field. Walk around the gate and stay close to the woods on the right. About 50 feet inside the gate, the trail cuts into the woods on the right. A sign marks the trail and the white blazes begin. Follow the fairly level trail that winds in and out around the flanks of Flattop Mountain. The trail provides access to the community of "Lost Cove," developed in the 1900's for the establishment of the C.C. Railroad. Once the railroad was completed, most settlers remained to remove timber from the surrounding area. The community had a school, church, grist mill and several homes. After the timber was removed, many remained and became farmers and small timber operators. The only access into this community was by foot or rail. The town is currently deserted, but several buildings still remain. It should be noted that these buildings are not along this trail, but they can be access from this trail. For details, consult the Chestoa, USGS Map. This trail offers several nice views of the Nolichucky River Gorge with its sheet rock cliffs. Camping is available at Spivey Gap Recreation Area, but not along this trail. Note: This trail becomes very difficult to follow the further it travels into the woods and does not officially meet the Lost Cove Trail.

Directions: From Burnsville, NC, Travel about 6 miles west to US 19W. Turn right and travel about 25 miles to Spivey Gap Recreation Area. Look for Forest Road 278 about .5 miles after the Appalachian Trail crosses at Spivey Gap, which is marked with a sign. Turn right onto Forest Road 278 and go about 1 mile to Devil's Creek Gap where Forest Road 5506 branches on the left. The Appalachian Trail also crosses here. No sign is at the trailhead, but the trail starts at the road gate.
