The Outer banks beaches are a 175 mile chain of islands offering an expanse of unspoiled natural scenery with plants and bird life at the southern two-thirds, while the northern third has become a crowded tourist spot. The beaches include Carova Beach, Corolla Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Roanoke Island, Oregon Inlet, Hatteras, and Ocracoke.

Head to Corolla Beach, north of Duck, for some mellow surf, good for beginners. Cape Point off Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and near surf-central Buxton is where the biggest barrels charge in.
The soundside beaches, particularly Pamlico Sound, offer shallower waters and gentler water ideal for families. The windsurfing and kiteboarding over here is tops, with the Outer Banks' thin strip of land acting as a big wave boom against the pounding Atlantic.
Ocracoke's beach was recently named America's best by the country's guru of the grain, Dr. Beach. To experience the best of the beach, camp at Ocracoke Island's 137-site NPS campground (early reservations advised!).

The original location of Corolla Surf Shops (opposite the Currituck Light) and The Pit Surf Shop Bar and Grill in Kill Devil Hills are both good places to rent or buy surfboards—or even take surf lessons. Favorite OBX breaks include the Duck, Avalon, and Frisco Piers...though perhaps the most memorable surfing spot out here is right off the Hatteras Lighthouse.
Deep-sea fisherfolk, get thee to Oregon Inlet on the south end of Bodie Island. Several boats leave each day for sportfish-filled waters.
If you want to explore the Northern Banks above Corolla, you'll need a 4x4 or a trenching spade and a couple of boards. This is where the wild horses of Corolla come out to play, and it's where the blacktop ends.
