Buxton Woods spans 825 acres and is located on Hatteras Island. It is located within the largest tract of maritime forest left standing on the Carolina coast and features pine and oak-covered dune ridges interspersed with maritime swamp forest and unique marshy wetlands. The area is an important resting place for migratory birds in the fall, and gray fox, mink, eastern box turtles, and southern dusky salamanders are often found here.
