The Currituck Beach Lighthouse stands 162 feet tall and was first illuminated in December 1875. This red-brick lighthouse has never been painted in order to distinguish it by daylight from Bodie, Lookout, and Hatteras Lighthouses. There is a gift shop inside, and regular tours are offered, during which visitors can climb the 214 steps up the circular staircase to the lighthouse gallery.
