Editor Tips & Helpful Hints
  • Grandfather is a privately operated nature preserve that's perfectly packaged for adventurous families. Visit a wildlife sanctuary on the lower slopes with otters, bears, cougars, and bald eagles, then hike up to the dramatic swinging bridge. If you've still got some puff, keep going to the summit, the highest point of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
  • Visit early (the park opens at 9 a.m.) to take in the views. Conditions are clearest in the mornings, plus you'll get a jump on the crush of people that arrive from mid-morning till mid-afternoon, especially during peak leaf-peeping season.
