From October to March, you can partake in a traditional Maori canoe and village experience with Waka Taiamai, a heritage tour company run by local Maoris. Their three-hour trips take 18 people on an authentic 50-foot Polynesian waka (canoe) to a traditional Maori hangi (feast) at a riverside village on a sacred island where Ngapuhi warriors were trained in the art of ancient warfare. You'll learn Maori songs and the famous haka chant and visit the splendid Haruru Falls. And of course you get up close and personal with the bay itself as you pick up a hoe (paddle) with the Kaihautu (chief) at the beginning of the waka chanting. A truly New Zealand experience all around.
