The Potomac Trail travels through a variety of forest types and follows the edges of some of the numerous ponds in the area. This relatively flat trail has a primitive natural tread and traverses occasional wet areas. It is a nice loop on which to learn cross-country skiing and is also a popular game bird hunting area. The Potomac Trail network connects with the Interloken Trail and the Potomac Group Campground reservation area (see Potomac Group Campground). Fishing is allowed in the ponds, following New York State DEC fishing regulations. Please practice Leave No Trace ethics, such as carry out what you carry in.

Directions: From the South, take State Route 17 (I-86 in some areas) to Exit 52 (Watkins Glen/State Route 14 North). In Watkins Glen, turn right at the Fourth St intersection onto State Route 414 North. Go approximately 9 miles north, past the Hector Ranger Station of the Finger Lakes National Forest. 0.5 miles past the Ranger Station, turn right on Schuyler County Route 2. Go east 4.4 miles past County Route 4 to the “Tee” intersection. Turn left onto Potomac Road and look for the signs for the Potomac Group Campground. Continue on to the first or second parking area and then follow the signs and blaze marks.From the North, take I-90 to Exit 41 (414 South to Hector, NY). 0.5 miles past Wickham’s Plaza, turn left onto County Route 2, the second asphalt road on the left. Go east 4.4 miles east past County Route 4 to the “Tee” intersection. Turn left onto Potomac Road and look for the signs for the Potomac Group Campground. Continue on to the first or second parking area and then follow the signs and blaze marks.
