This world's largest collection of materials by and about lesbians and their communities is a key repository of lesbian annals that includes more than 20,000 books and 12,000 photographs. Located in dyke-popular Park Slope in Brooklyn, the three-story archives aren't open every day (call ahead), but it's worth the effort to arrange a visit to their rotating exhibits of memorabilia, collectibles, LPs, videos, huge library of lesbian-authored books, pulp novels, cartoons, comic books, newspapers, and 'zines. There are even boots worn by one of the marshalls of the NYC Dyke March. (Be sure not to miss the second floor bathroom with its collection of lesbian buttons.) The personable volunteers can show you around, and it's also possible to arrange group tours.
