A true Oasis in the barren desert of eastern New Mexico, Oasis State Park contains tall cottonwoods, shifting sand dunes, and a bright green acre fishing pond.

The high plains trail runs 1.5 miles along the base of the dunes, through prairie grasses. There are other, shorter trails in the park, including a short nature trails with signs explaining the local ecology.

Bird watching is a major attraction to the area. More than eighty species of birds have been spotted at Oasis State Park, May is the best month for birding.

Directions: From Portales, Oasis State Park is located in the east-central region of the state, near the Texas border. It is just north west of the town of Portales, take I-70 north.
