Lake Mead National Recreation Area is just 25 miles from Las Vegas at its closest point. The lake has more than 550 miles of shoreline, which gives outdoor enthusiasts year-round opportunities for swimming, water-skiing, camping, boating, fishing, touring, and cruising. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals, adapted to survive in an extreme place where rain is scarce and temperatures soar. The campgrounds—which allow RVs, trailers, and tents—have restrooms, running water, dump stations, grills, picnic tables, and shade. A $10-per-day fee is paid immediately upon occupying a campsite. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
