The 726-foot-high Hoover Dam was built during the Great Depression by thousands of men and their families. Remarkably, it took less than five years to construct. It is a National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. The dam sees the most visitors in summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, while the slowest months are January and February. Traffic during holidays and weekends can be extremely heavy, with long delays. Passenger vehicles are allowed over the dam but are subject to inspection at security checkpoints. The least crowded time of day for tours is 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
