Lolo Pass practically crawls with recreationists during the winter months, but there's room for everybody at this perfect stop on the Idaho-Montana border. The visitor center sits at just over 5200 feet, and it's the gateway to more than 15 miles of groomed Nordic trails and 250 miles of snowmobile trails—to say nothing of the countless acres of the Clearwater and Lolo national forests that are accessible from the pass and open to skiers, snowshoers, and snowboarders.
The comfy visitor center features internet access, twenty-four hour restrooms, a respectable (non-kitschy) bookstore, an utterly wonderful warming hut, and an interpretive exhibit about the region's geography and history. This is Lewis and Clark country, so be sure to take a look at the massive 3D map tracing their trail alongside the Nez Pierce Trail and other, contemporary routes.
