Travel 40 km. (24 mi.) northwest of Mazatlán proper to Playa Bruja, the beach with the area's most consistent surf; board rentals are available on the beach or in town. Try to visit between April and December. Get up early in the morning for the best waves, virtually all of which are lefts. Hook up with a guide or long-time surfer to reach other good spots; many are hidden and hard to get to thanks to marshes and seasonal roads.
