Cenotes, submerged or collapsed limestone caves, define the underground of the entire Yucatan Peninsula and provide tourists of all ages an experience that is truly magical. The color of many of the cenotes cannot be adequately described, and there is a feeling of mystery that goes with swimming in these subterranean pools. Not all cenotes are underground, however. Some look more like round pools or lakes and are known as pit cenotes. Cenote Azul, across Chetumal bay from Xcalak near Bacalar, is a pit cenote. In fact, it's the largest pit cenote in all of Mexico, 600 feet across and more than 290 feet deep. It is a place to experience a truly unique freshwater dive.
