Jardin Botanico Yaax Che is a botanical garden that spans 148 acres. The gardens were first established in 1984 and were dedicated in 1990 to Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín, a scientist who devoted much of his life to the study and preservation of the Maya way of life, their natural environment, and their knowledge and use of the region's medicinal plants.

  • There's no guarantee of seeing wild animals, but look closely for tropical birds, wild monkeys, and iguanas.
  • This garden also provides insight into Mayan life. Included on the grounds are small ruins and some recreated Maya buildings, such as a camp and a home complete with implements traditionally used by Mayan people.
  • Before going, learn the Mayan legend of the giant ceiba tree (Yaax Chen). In Mayan belief the ceiba is the tree of life and its roots reach into the underworld and branches hold up the heavens. It provided a pathway for souls to reach the heavens. Today, it remains important in Mayan culture and is almost never cut down.
