Xplor, the newest adventure park in the Riviera Maya, is one of the most fun and innovative family fun parks around. It took five years for construction crews to dig out an intricate system of walkways through caves full of stalactites, underground rivers, and deep caverns. As you walk through the park, automatic cameras snap candid photos that are tied to a microchip in your helmet and displayed on television monitors as you pass by. The photos are available for purchase at the end of your visit. The zip lines are the most popular of the park's four attractions. But beware: They reach speeds of about 25 miles per hour, and the heights can be daunting for some younger children (or vertigo-prone adults). Many of the zip lines splash down through waterfalls and into pools, so wear clothes you don't mind getting wet. You can also explore underground rivers, through caverns illuminated by electric lights, either on a hand-propelled raft or by swimming. The swim can be quite cold, but you can go at your own pace and don't need to worry about crashing into others. The amphibious vehicles are essentially souped-up four-wheelers that are entertaining for preteens and teens. Perhaps the most refreshing part about the park (other than the underground rivers) is the food. A visit to the salad bar, full of fresh and delicious local fruits and vegetables, comes free with deluxe park entry. And at the end of a chilly swim, you'll find a coffee station with snacks, hot chocolate, and cappuccino.
