Kids 40 to 55 inches tall get half off the adult price.
Pricing is complex and it will put a dent in your budget. Check to see exactly what comes with each pass. Many of the best activities, like Snuba and swimming with sharks, are extra. Plan in advance and tell kids exactly what you're going to do and not do.
Buses for Xcaret leave from Playa del Carmen near the dock; the park is about four miles south of Playa.

It's not exactly a theme park, and not entirely a nature experience either. It's a little like being on an exotic movie set, perhaps an Indiana Jones set with natural pools, underground rivers, ancient ruins, and jungle lagoons. You might encounter sharks or dolphins, raft a river, or stumble onto a bat cave. Or you might just lie on a white stretch of powdery beach. Xcaret offers a setting that is almost unbelievable, and much of it is natural. But a fair amount of this experience is also Disneyesque: spectacular shows, horses, theatrical recreations of a pre-Hispanic ball game, and a Maya village. It's part aquarium and zoo, too, with a variety of exotic critters to see from afar and up close. And there's the adventure. You can swim with sharks and dolphins, try snorkeling, helmet diving, or the new family rage Snuba, which combines snorkeling with the underwater breathing capability of scuba but without the heavy gear or certification. You could spend several days here and not see it all.

Xcaret is a zoo-meets-Mexican-Epcot-Center, with coral-reef aquariums, underground river swims, and Mayan fire-dancing presentations, all amid jaguars, pumas, tropical birds, and howler monkeys. The nightly Mayan dance presentation is a loud, drum-intense affair in which costumed dancers whirl about, run their feet and hands through fire, and present rituals that were (maybe) once performed on this very spot, back in the ancient days when Xcaret was home to a temple to the Mayan goddess Ixel. These days, it's more famous for its sea-turtle rescue program, which brings some 250 baby turtles in each year, nurses them to health, and releases 200 back into the wild. The ones that stay in the park swim about its rivers, reaching a gargantuan size that impresses visitors young and old. New to the park this year is a "swim with the sharks" program, in which visitors can feed and swim with gentle nurse sharks.

Xcaret's most romantic spot: an idyllic lagoon set between the jungle and the Caribbean, with hammocks strung periodically along its edge.
Late afternoon, after many cruise and tour groups depart, is a good time to find a quiet, romantic spot in some of the park's natural pools or the lagoon.
You must use biodegradable sunscreen in the park's rivers and pools. If you don't have any, check park stores.

You might even find a few secluded spots that make the everyday world seem far away. Xcaret is Disney-like and pricey, but its range of activities and movie-location beauty give it romantic and special-occasion appeal.
