It's also the northernmost tip of the Mesoamerican barrier reef, which stretches southward more than 450 miles to Honduras, making it the second largest reef in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Snorkelers can wade out from the beach and explore the shallow coral heads, which provide shelter to sleeping nurse sharks and stingrays, as well as colorful clouds of reef fish. Out past the reef, constant winds make this one of area's best spots for windsurfing and kiteboarding.
