This nonprofit organization owns a small stretch of beach on Akumal Bay in the tranquil beach village of Akumal, and has leveraged that piece of land to help pressure hotels, charter-boat captains, and tour operators to help preserve the Mesoamerican Reef and the prime sea-turtle hatching habitat along the beach. The center runs volunteer programs and baby-turtle-watching events during the hatching season (usually in late July and August). Its open-air offices offer a quick walk-through that future marine biologists and eco-warriors might find interesting on their way to the beach.
