El Arrayan is the favorite restaurant of Gary Beck, a gay man who writes the frequently updated "Beck's Best" restaurant guide to Puerto Vallarta. Owned by Carmen Porras, a lesbian from Mexico City, the restaurant is at the top of the list of many looking for great authentic Mexican food, so don't ask for fajitas or burritos! It's in a beautiful new building designed to look like the courtyard of a Mexican hacienda. On the down side, the food is pricey and the portions are small, and it's a bit off the beaten gay path, in the El Centro or downtown section of Puerto Vallarta. Be sure to make a reservation, especially if you are visiting in the busy winter months.
