The Secret Canyon Trail and Espinosa Trail are the two main trails for hikers and horses on the Descanso Ranger District.

Secret Canyon Trail extends over 13.8 miles of which 13 lie within the Pine Creek Wilderness. The trail is accessible from two locations; in the south at Horsethief Trailhead and in the north off Old Highway 80. The trail is open to both hikers and equestrians offering a moderate to strenuous trek. Directions: From Alpine, CA, Travel east on Interstate 8 then head south on Japatul Valley Road. At the fork bear right onto Lyons Valley Road to reach Horsethief Trailhead / Secret Canyon Trail. Just beyond the trailhead is Japatul Fire Station where more info. can be found.
