If you're a fit and adventuresome camper, and know others, organize what's likely to be an unforgettable trip to one of Assateague's six backcountry camping areas, all in Maryland’s section of the national seashore. There are two oceanside areas and four pinewoods areas bayside. The sites are open year-round (except bayside closures during hunting-season); each has only a chemical toilet and picnic table. Before you set up camp, though, you'll have to get campsite and trailhead parking permits and transport everything you'll need (including water) to your campsite. That'll mean a backpacking trek of three to 13 miles, although canoe/kayak delivery is also permissible for the bayside camping areas (delivery by off-road vehicle is not).
