Assateague Island National Seashore's most striking feature has to be its superb, sandy, unspoiled, and seemingly endless beaches. Among the finest on the East Coast, they stretch the full length of the 37-mile-long barrier island, and only in a very few places are there visible signs of manmade structures—mostly decades-old ruins. These beaches furnish wonderful opportunities for observing birds and other wildlife, fishing, horseback riding, off-roading, hiking, swimming and other water sports, beachcombing, and of course doing nothing at all.
