• Although a little pricey, you can rent a four-bedroom country cottage on the shores of the Rappahannock River. That solves the dilemma about who's the designated driver, right? There are also a couple of rental properties that overlook the rows of grapes at General's Ridge Vineyard, a few miles southeast near Montross.
• Campers should check out nearby Westmoreland State Park, located at the cliff-lined spot where the Potomac empties into the Chesapeake. There's a nice beach here, six miles of hiking trails, and a well-maintained campground with 133 wooded sites.
