• This Nature Conservancy reserve is a bird watcher's paradise. Osprey, bald eagles, eiders, heron and mergansers can all be spotted here.
• The Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy roil together just off the island, producing frequent fog and dramatic seas.
• The peat bogs of the island contain 10,000 years of accumulated sphagnum moss and rare plants like the dragon's mouth orchid.
