The wide path begins its gentle, shaded climb at the trailhead, becoming steep and a bit rough before leveling at the one-mile point. Twisting through spruce and birch, the trail ascends more than 1,000 feet as it approaches the abandoned fire tower. The summit overlooks a maze of the Moosehead region, high above wilderness lakes, peaks, and towering mountains.

  • The firewarden's cabin makes a convenient snack and water break on a hike up Big Spencer. Though the cabin is locked, the front porch is open for lounging in the sun and taking in the view.
  • The summit of Big Spencer has one of the best views of any summit in Maine, taking in the bays of Moosehead lake and great bulk of Mt. Katahdin.
