Taormina has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century, when writers and artists flocked to this ancient town to bask in its mystical allure. It's a major tourist focal point of Sicily, with popular beaches accessible via an aerial tramway and funiculars, and Mount Etna looms not far away. Uphill from the beaches is the fairy-tale medieval village, home to fabulous restaurants and nightlife nestled in its winding streets dripping with balconies and stonework. The capital of Byzantine Sicily in the 9th century, Taormina is also home to a famous ancient Greek theater that hosts a bevy of arts and cultural events in the summertime. A short cable-car ride down from the town takes you to Lido Mazzaro, a good beach with bars and eateries. On the waterfront near Taormina is Giardini-Naxos, one of the most sophisticated seaside resorts on Sicily, with another sandy beach lined with good hotels and gourmet restaurants.
