On the Atlantic side of the waterfront, several miles from downtown Punta del Este, is Playa de La Barra. It's one of the city's glamour points, but it can get very crowded in season. This is especially true at night near the bars and clubs—the traffic crawls. Many familiar with Southern California will find the area reminds them of Laguna Beach, especially with its many art galleries just off the beach. The area is also known for surfing.
