Vieux Québec has accomplished a difficult feat: Throughout its 400-year history, the city has preserved the old-world ambience that defines its classic quarters, while never becoming stale. A day inside the city walls is a trip back in time—among the district's grand forts and historic mansions, parks, monasteries, and official buildings are art galleries and clothing shops, restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Boutiques and eateries line City Hall on the route to Hotel De Ville. June through August, the gardens of this famous vine-wrapped building are peppered with poppy-hued flowers. Stroll along Dufferin Terrace, a boardwalk overlooking the Saint Lawrence River. When tourists and vendors pack the walkway, summer has finally arrived.
