The tiny carless island of Comino was once reportedly the hideout of pirates and smugglers and is now a favorite getaway for day-trippers from the nearby island of Malta. Isolated Comino is said to have only four permanent inhabitants, and it's a protected bird sanctuary and marine reserve. Its rugged coastline is delineated by sheer limestone cliffs, and most visitors head straight to the isle's celebrated Blue Lagoon 
for its incredibly clear, azure waters. This sheltered inlet of shimmering ocean is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Comino (named after the cumin seed that once flourished in the Maltese islands) is worth a visit all year round, but in winter it's better for walkers and photographers than swimmers.
