Every visitor to East Africa has to ride a dhow, the traditional wooden sailboat with triangular sails that have plied the coast for centuries. The Tamarind claims to be the largest dhow in the region at over 75 feet long. It hosts a romantic candlelit sunset dinner, starting with a "Dawa" (a cocktail made of vodka, lime, honey, and sugar) handed to you by a traditionally dressed waiter as you step off of the gangplank. After a cruise around Tudor Creek with fine views of Mombasa's Old Town and Fort Jesus, the Tamarind moors in a sheltered bay at the head of the creek, where grilled lobster and steak are served as part of a gourmet four-course meal. Afterward, a live band plays while guests dance on the main deck under the stars. (-) Close
