One of the main historical sites on the Kenyan coast, this Portuguese fort overlooking the ocean dates back to the 16th century. Designed by an Italian architect and later added to and altered by the Arabs and the British, Fort Jesus changed hands often and played a key historical role in the control of the East African coast. Highlights include a museum, a café, ramparts, gun turrets, cannons, and underground passageways, and a spectacular sound and light show three nights each week. Guards in flowing robes brandish flaming torches, and sound effects and actors bring to life the turbulent history of the fort. The show is capped off with a candlelit dinner served in the open courtyard of the fort, under the stars and the sounds of the sea.
