Many species of birds and butterflies live among the 52 varieties of ferns and abundant plantlife. Watch for the doctor bird, a long-tailed hummingbird that serves as the island's national bird. Mayfield guides lead walks along shaded paths to waterfalls where you can hike up the rocks that form the cascades or swim into caves submerged in the spring-fed natural pools. The Riverwalk Tour at the Mayfield estate is a guided walk on a scenic path to Bamboo Village, where visitors are assigned private thatch-roof huts overlooking the Mayfield River. A casual bar and restaurant there serve refreshments.
