Located in northern Dalmatia, the Kornati archipelago (the densest in the Mediterranean) is made up of 150 mostly uninhabited islands, and the 89 islands of the southern part were declared a national park in 1980. The park is three-quarters ocean, however, making for a scuba diver's wet dream of 80 square miles of water. The isles are actually a submerged mountain range, with unusual rock formations where many species of fish and plant life thrive. Divers can only go with an approved company into the seven designated zones within the park. Neighboring Zadar is a major departure point for the park and where you'll find most of the scuba companies, as well as other boat and snorkel tours.
