FamilyExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
- The Vatican Museums encompass ten collections plus the Sistine Chapel. They are without argue the world's greatest collections of art--and you can't see it all in a day. Do some research with your kids and let them help decide which areas are "must-see." Maybe they've learned about Raphael or the Sistine Chapel, or love Roman statues. They'll be more interested if they have a say in what you see.
- Truly the Sistine Chapel is a must. Not just for Michelangelo's ceiling, one of the greatest works of art in the world, but also for works by Botticelli and other renowned Renaissance artists. These paintings can be appreciated for their astonishing beauty, but also for the complex theological story they tell. Again, do a little research to pique kids' interest and make this visit more meaningful.
- You must be properly dressed or you won't be allowed in. No short skirts or shorts (knees of both sexes must be covered), no bare shoulders or strap tops. Allow several hours to view the musuems, which include papal apartments decorated by Raphael (who died already a great master at the age of 37). There's an admission charge, but the last Sunday of the month is free (and thus very crowded).
