While lauded as one of St. John's most exciting dives, Carval Rock is also one of the region's more challenging, due to strong currents and rougher-than-normal seas at its location. After fighting current through the shallow area know as The Cut, divers must circumnavigate the small rock island underwater, passing through a steep, narrow canyon before exiting onto an 80-foot wall adorned with soft corals. The final swim back to the boat passes through a boulder field, where nurse sharks and reef squid are common sights. During the summer months, huge schools of baitfish congregate in the shallows around the rock. Divers can watch as silvery tarpon hunt the small fish from below and sea birds dive-bomb them from above.
